I am working in Word 2007 and trying to insert an equation. Equation is
greyed out. Symbol is avaliable. What is causing equation to be greyed out.
I have used this function before.

I had the same problem. I fixed it simply by not being in compatibility mode.
That is you should save your document as 2007 docx document.

I saved it as a word 2007 doc and still greyed out.

I have this same issue, however, if you select insert object on the insert
ribbon and select equation editor from there it works fine
